Mistakes and the Evolution of Conventions

Abstract: A convention can be understood as an equilibrium of a coordination game played by the individuals
in a society: once a behavior becomes a convention, individuals prefer to conform to the behavior given the
expectation that others are going to conform. Since different behaviors can be established as conventions,
which one will actually emerge is a matter of inquiry. When agents make rare mistakes, it turns out that the
way in which they make mistakes crucially determines the convention which is selected in the long-run. We
explore a number of error models, illustrating the variety of selection results that are obtained.

What are structures good for? From mapping to ascription
(joint work with Elena Castellani and Tarja Knuuttila)

Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the notion of structure as employed when considering models and representation in science. Structuralist approaches to scientific theories have a long and respectable tradition in the philosophy of science. In particular, the semantic view of scientific theories and recent versions of structural realism have notoriously contributed to the philosophical interest in the role of structures. Which kind of structure to consider with respect to models, and how this structure is used and related to a target system in order for the model to “represent”, is a crucial point in the relevant literature. We focus on this very point and argue that a source of confusion in current debates has to do precisely with a misleading use of structures. We find this use misleading in a twofold sense. First, for not clearly distinguishing between the two levels at which the use of models (and related structures) takes place: the “object-level” of working scientists, where scientific theories are elaborated and tested,
and the “meta-level” of philosophical analysis, where the results presented at the object-level are reconceptualized in terms of abstract structures such as sets or categories (we follow here the terminology used by French (2012) in drawing the distinction). Second, for inadequately identifying the relevant structures at stake when considering the representational function of models.

Generalised Revenge

Abstract: Since Saul Kripke's influential work in the 70's, the revisionary approach to semantic paradox—
the idea that the semantic paradoxes must be solved by weakening classical logic—has been increasingly
popular. In this paper, we present a new revenge argument to the effect that revisionary approaches
breed new paradoxes that cannot be blocked by weakening the logic. More specifically, we argue that
each of the main revisionary approaches to paradox is subject to revenge paradoxes that does not resort
to meta-theoretical notions. Most revisionists agree that certain unparadoxical sentences can be safely
reasoned with classically, whereas other paradoxical sentences yield absurdity if reasoned with classically.
We argue that, under minimal assumptions on the logical revision to be operated, revisionary theorists
are cognitively committed to the notions of paradoxicality and unparadoxicality so understood. However,
consistent non-classical theories cannot express paradoxicality, and inconsistent (but non-trivial) theories
cannot express the dual notion of unparadoxicality.

Giocare in modo razionale

Abstract

Is the extended mind hypothesis nonsensical?

Abstract
: The extended mind hypothesis (EM) claims that some of our mental states/processes extend outside our heads and into objects in our environment, such as notebooks and iPhones. The existing debate concerning EM has focused on questions of justification concerning EM: whether we should believe that EM is true or false based on current evidence.
This paper takes a step back and focuses on a prior question: what does it mean to say that mental states/processes "extend" into physical objects? Some theorists doubt that a good answer can be provided;
they have concluded that EM is not a genuine statement of fact. In this paper, I look at four responses that attempt to make sense of EM. I argue only one proposal---based on the realisation relation---has a chance of success. The realisation-relation proposal, however, has significant, and unanticipated, revisionary consequences for EM.

Hyperintensional Deontic Logic

Abstract: I argue that deontic modals are hyperintensional, that is, logical equivalents contents cannot be substituted in their scope. I give two arguments, one deductive, one abductive. First, I simply prove that the contrary thesis leads to falsity; second, I claim that a hyperintensional theory of deontic modals fares better than its rivals
in terms of elegance, theoretical simplicity, and explanatory power (e.g. Ross's paradox, the Gentle Murderer, The Good Samaritan, Free Choice Permission, and the Miners' Paradox arguably disappear).
I discuss a hyperintensional deontic logic based on truthmaker semantics.
